Dining Decor

We’ll take a break from our sleep struggles and share some updated photos of our dining room.  Last time we were in this room, we put in a new light fixture.  Since then, there have been some recent additions (yes, we have energy to work on the house while hardly ever sleeping… where it comes from, we have no idea!):

Before we introduce the new additions, here’s a look back at the dining room when we moved in:

Dining room before:

Custom console table: For months we were using an old book shelf for a side table in the dining room to hold the phone, and throw our keys when we walked in.  It was brown and bulky and didn’t fit our needs and I wanted it lower so I could put pictures above it…. so I wanted a REAL side table…specifically, a console.  But I was picky, and liked bits and pieces of different designs.  I mentioned this to my Dad (the expert carpenter) and on our Open House weekend, he surprised us with this:

A custom designed dining room console table.  Fully equipped with two ‘junk drawers’… you know the catch-all drawers in your office or kitchen that have pencils, scissors, tape, miscellaneous stuff that you always need handy but are two small to dedicate a whole drawer or space for each item?  Yeah, well now we have TWO of those!

I’m still working on filling up the shelves with cookbooks and baskets to hold goodies… and soon enough everything will have it’s place.

New hardware: A little while back when we took a trip to find our first attempt at colors for the hallway, we also picked up some new hardware for the wine bar.  Hardware that matches the new console table!  It was a quick project… just some new screws and knobs, and ta-da…looks like new!

Pictures:  Did you notice the pictures over the new console table? Weird that I haven’t put up wedding photos yet?  I have big plans for the living room for a family portrait and wedding photos…so just hold your horses until then…

Dining room progress:

What do you think about the progress so far?  Do you have a ‘junk drawer’? What do you keep in it?

  1. Nice work. I love the console especially.

I don’t have a junk drawer per se, but I recently hung a linen shoe organizer on a door in our mudroom, and I am using it as an organized catch-all for the following:

    1. Phones, keys, pocket change.
    2. Dog things (leash, collar, towel, outfits).
    3. Grab-and-go healthy snacks.
    4. Sunscreen, sunglasses, gloves, hats, etc.

It’s a wonderful system, and with so many pockets there is room for everything you might need to grab on your way out or drop on your way in.

    • That’s a great idea. I’ve been contemplating a tall but skinny solution for our back entry (the most used) that has no floor space but a big wall that I could put some kinda storage unit. A shoe organizer is a good thought…

  2. Girl, I am loving your style. Love, love, loVE!!! I can’t stress it enough. I can’t wait until we move into my dream home — It won’t be for a few years. But yeah, once that happens, I totally want to do a lot of these DIY projects. Beautiful job. Keep me inspired.

    • Thanks! Are you guys going to buy a fixer upper like us and become crazy home renovators too? It’s fun… But takes time and energy… Something all working mothers have, right!? Lol
