What’s Up, Doc?

This was the scene last night at 6:30PM…

That’s Avery playing in the waiting room at the doctors.  Yep, we’re back again.  As if they hadn’t seen him enough in his first 6 months of life.  We were back for good reason though.  For the past week, Avery had been a little off.  Runny nose, rash on his face, loose bowel movements, very cuddly and clingy, wasn’t eating as much as usual, and had a little gunk in his eyes.

So, yesterday Avery’s Daycare called saying he had to get checked out before coming back, to make sure he didn’t have anything contagious.  And guess what?  He does.  Another ear infection!  As if he hasn’t had enough of those yet.  In a way we are happy we know what it is and he’ll start getting better after being on antibiotics for 24 hours, but it’s also frustrating.  As two working parents, that means one of us has to stay home with Avery.  Oh well, we do what we have to – and we make it work.

Vinay is home with Avery today and so far he’s still cuddly and tired and not eating the best, but he’s only been on meds for 18 hours now.  He is in good spirits though – Daddy sent me a picture of Avery giving some trouble to an innocent little penguin…

Are your kiddos sick all the time?  Since Avery came a whole month early, we expected ‘complications’.  We were fortunate to only have a litle jaundice up front, but once daycare started, as expected, he got sick a bunch.  I’ve been told that they either get sick a lot as babies and then it’ll improve, or they’ll be sick later when they are older.  Is that true for you?

  1. Hannah had chronic ear infections, which resulted in tubes being placed at 8/9mo old. The ear infections coupled with the other illnesses she had, I was home all the time! After she hit 1 the illnesses seemed to slow a bit, but I was still home way too much. Around 2 Hannah hit every illness in the book again, including strep –thank you daycare, and I spent a lot of time in and out of the doctors. Since then it hasn’t been bad. I hope that when she starts Kindergarten this year she is already immune to germs :)

  2. Elisabeth had very very bad jaundice when she was 4 days old, then she was a picture of health until she went to nursery at 10 months……she then had a constant cold (and a couple of ear infections) for about 6 months, and then they all of a sudden stopped and she has been fine and healthy for quite a while now. I’m pretty sure it’s normal for them to be ill a lot in the first year and a bit. Hope he gets better soon.

  3. Sorry to hear about Avery’s ear infection! Poor baby! I haven’t had to deal with any specific illnesses yet, except for a little jaundice in the beginning as well. she started to have this eye infection thing and I ended up googling to squirt breastmilk in her eye. Lol. Sounds crazy, I know, but it worked. I told my doctor and he kind of laughed but said “it’s definitely not hurting her so why not?!?” lol. Did you breastfeed? I heard that helps with their immunities. Feel better Avery!

  4. Poor guy! Caleb was also a month early. No jaundice..thank goodness! He had a couple eye infections and loose bowel movements for a bit. And that one mild fever (that I am thinking is probably teething related). That is not bad for 11 months. Hope Avery gets better soon!
