The 18 Month Check Up

Avery got nothing but praises at his 18 month check up yesterday.  He was weighed, measured, and no shots!

Height: 33.5 (81%)

Growth Chart Length for Age 18 months

Avery is still tall for his age, but around the same percentile he’s been since he was born.

Weight 23lb 12oz (43%)

Growth Chart Weight for Age 18 months

The same goes for his weight… been sticking around the same.  Except this one outlier (math vocab!) at an appointment in January when he was sick.  I remember them weighting him on a standing scale, instead of the baby one he sits/lays on (naked).  So that must have been when they weighed him with his clothes on.

And as for his weight and height comparably… he’s still tall and skinny!

The doctor asked what he has been up to and I told her about the cold he (and I) are getting over.  She didn’t see signs of any ear infections, so I think this cold will pass.  Then she drilled us with some questions…

Some Q & A with the doc:

Q: How many words is he saying?

A: 20

Doc: Any more than 10 is great!

Q: Does he point to at least two body parts?

A: Yes.  Eyes, nose, mouth, ears, belly button, and toes.

Doc: Oh wow!

Q: Does he eat well?

A: Most of the time, but he refuses to eat vegetables although we keep offering them.

Q: Does he imitate you?

A: Yes. (and I’m thinking in my head… he makes a fishy face back to me when I do, hehe)

Q: Does he stack blocks?

A: Yes, much more so now than at 12 months when he just wanted to knock them down.

Q: Does he walk and climb?

A: OH YES.  He is very active.

Then it was onto the poking and prodding   She listened to his breathing and heartbeat.  Avery just sat there, looking at her, and giggled at the cold stethoscope. She checked his belly and exclaimed ‘Oh I guess you do eat well!  Nice tummy!.’ Then it was onto his ears. She shined the light in and Avery sat very still.  Onto the other ear.  Avery laughed as he saw the light go by.  ’Oh isn’t he just the most pleasant thing!?  Usually all the 18 month olds come in here kicking and screaming.  This is so nice!’  Next was his mouth and she tried putting the wooden stick in his mouth and Avery just looked at him.  I told Avery ‘Say Ahh’ and he opened his mouth and said Ah.  The doctor was in stitches.  She said she’d never seen anything like that.  I told her that’s how I get the toothbrush in his mouth.

And with that, Avery got a good bill of health… and won’t go back until he’s 2.

After our appointment, we raced home to take advantage of the warm weather.  The park was packed and we stayed for a whole hour… no jacket or hat… Avery was thrilled to be on the move, sans layers of clothing.  A perfect reward for a stellar doc appt!

How often do you take your kiddos outside and to the park?  We go every afternoon when we get home, pending the weather’s cooperation.

NUMB3ERS: One Year Check-Up

IMG_2459Man, I feel like I’ll be talking about Avery’s one-year mark for weeks… Another big event that came along with turning ONE was his one-year doctor’s visit.  Here’s our recap of the visit in fun numbers style…

2 – The number of girls Avery flirted with in the waiting room before our appointment.  He’s such a ‘ladies man‘.

4 – Shots.  Avery had the flu shot for the first time, and a few others.  He was such a champ.  He cried for less than a minute and he hasn’t shown any signs of reactions, yet!

21 – Avery weighs 21lbs and 6 ounces!  I was sooo excited.  He’d been hovering above 20 pounds the past two months and I was hoping he’d pass the 21 marker, and he did!  This puts him in the 29th percentile… up from 21st percentile at his 9 month check-up.

growth chart 12 months -weight

30 – Avery is now 30 inches tall!  That’s up 1inch since his last visit at 9 months.  This also means he is only 31-1/2 inches away from passing me in height!  He’s still on the tall side, in the 58th percentile.

growth chart 12 months -length

47 – The size of Avery’s BIG head (in cm).  It grew 1 1/2 cm since last visit… and he’s still on the BIG side at the 69th percentile, up from the 55th last visit!  Big head =  big brain, right?

How’s Avery doing developmentally for 12-months?  Here’s a few items on the checklist of items she asked about:

  • Walking?: Check!
  • Talking? Check!  We did let the doc know we’re a little concerned because he’s not a big talker.  He does babble a lot, and the doc said that was good.
  • Drinking Milk? Check!
  • Teeth? Check!
  • Eating using the Pincher Grasp?: Check!
  • Does he Bang toys Together? Check!
  • Sleeping thru the Night? No!  Oh did we have a talk with her about this.  The doc suggested a few things and we’re on our way to sleeping thru the night… Avery’s slept much better this week! Catch up on our sleep struggles here, here, here, and here.
  • Does he Point? No!  Avery doesn’t really point…something we need to work on I guess?

NUMB3ERS: August

August has come and gone.  I can’t believe it’s already September.  For most, that means back to school.  For us, that means we’ve been blogging for ONE YEAR!  Yep, it’s been a whole year since our first post, when we moved into our new house.  We’ll ‘celebrate’ this next week with a fun post, but before we look back at the whole year, here’s a recap of August in the RatnamResidence

The Blog

23,764 all-time visits.  Whew, that’s a lot for our first year!

2,286 visitors checked us out this month.  Where do they come from? The top FOUR countries are:

1 US    2 Canada    3 UK    4 India

august international site visitors

It’s pretty cool that people across the world are checking us out from countries like Australia and the Philipines.  What I wonder is, where our readers come from within the US.  Hey WordPress, can you give us a map showing that too?  Any other bloggers wish they could see that too?

125 Followers. 11 people have joined us in the past month!  Who are they? Victoria Elizabeth Barnes (She’s blogging about renovating her 1890 Victorian Home), Kate (She and her husband take adventures with their little one in tow), Natalie and Maya (They have a design studio and blog about design, fashion, and food.  I heart their website design)…

28 people searched the net for ‘bumbo seat’ and stumbled upon us.  Maybe this is because of the recent recall for bumbo seats?  Do you have a bumbo seat? What are you doing with it now that it’s recalled?  Other popular search terms to find us were:

19 Posts.  Bleh, not ideal as I hope to post daily M-F, but typically one day a week I skip because I’m swamped at work or have to run out for errands at lunch (when I typically write).  How often do you post to your blog, and how do you find time to!?

1 Duck trophy.  I won the annual duck race at our Chinese New Year themed family reunion. And Vinay ‘volenteered’ to be on the committe to plan next year’s reunion!

2 Avery took his first two steps while we were in California.  Didn’t surprise us, as Avery started crawling our last trip out there! He is now on the move, walking everywhere! I can’t believe he’s almost a toddler! He even said his first words this month!

3 I am knee deep into the three books of the ‘Fifty Shades series‘… Loving them!  Reading is a nice escape and great for relaxing right before bed – I even escaped one day during lunch to read because I couldn’t put the book down!

baby penguin11 items on my ‘to do’ list on our rainy weekend.  We got lots done and Avery loved ‘helping’.

16 Avery had his sixteenth doctor’s appointment this year – they found another ear infection.  Avery stayed home with Daddy for a day on antibiotics before returning to daycare.  He’s all better and no penguins were hurt in the process…

50 I must have sent out over 50 invitations to Avery’s First Birthday Party. And come to think of it, I only have 12 RSVPs so far… come on people… has the RSVP died?  I bet the week of the party I’ll hear from the remaining 30 something invitees.

country concert9 I waited nine long months since Vinay gave me tickets at Christmas – to Country Fest.  We enjoyed a fun date night together listening to Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney.

430 Is the new time Avery and I get home every day.  Our new ‘schedule‘ with Avery’s new daycare means less commuting and we’re home earlier!

new couch delivered

0 After our unexpected trip to California, we stayed home the month of August – sticking with our plan to travel less and spend more time at home as a family relaxing and resting from our busy week.

2 We had zero pieces of furniture for a week while we swapped out our ‘old’ sofa bed and got a TWO new pieces that are family friendly with an ottoman!

11 looming student loans left to pay off.  Yay!  I paid off one this past month and I’m chipping away at them with the goal of having them all paid off by my 30th birthday (3 years away), and then we can have little Ratnam #2!
