B Strong & Escape to NYC

The past two weeks has been full of emotions for our city of Boston.  First the bombings on Marathon Monday, hundreds injured and in surgeries all week, the manhunt on Friday that closed down the city, and now a week of funerals for those lost.  Running my virtual 5K for Boston seems so insignificant compared to the pourout of support from around the world for Boston.  Can you believe the charity fund created has passed 21 million dollars!?  We did our part to help.  I bought ‘One Boston’ T shirts for my parents & Vinay (They didn’t have my size because they sold out fast).

one boston tee shirtIt took a little research to find legit T shirts, because there are already so many scams out there (so sad).  I found them on adidas’ website – the same company that makes all Boston Marathon gear, and 100% of the proceeds of these shirts go to One Fund Boston!  In no way will money replace what was lost, but the commradery of Bostonians and runners around the world is just such an amazing tribute to those affected by the horrible events last week – and we’re so happy we can do a little to help.

For those of you that don’t know, I work in Watertown, Mass.  Yeah, the sleepy little suburb of Boston that was the epicenter of last Friday’s manhunt for the second bombing suspect.  I had no idea what was going on until I was about to step out of the kitchen at 6:15am to head to work and a coworker called me and told me not to go in because the office was closed.  Closed!?  Why would they close the office?  The office never closes – unless the city is shut down – which it was for the Hurricane warning last fall, and this time… something even scarier – a marathon bomber was on the loose!   We switched on the tube and after catching up on the lockdown in Watertown, we decided I would stay home with Avery.  I was itching to make a trip to the gym, and send Avery to daycare for a 1/2 day (it was paid for so why not?) but because they kept saying on the news that they had no idea where the guy was, we weren’t going to risk it.

So, Avery and I stayed home while Vinay headed off to work.  We snuggled on the couch while I caught up on the events on TV.

IMG_0743

Then we did some stacking – Avery loves this toy….

IMG_0745

And even some laundry…

IMG_0744

Vinay worked in Boston, which wasn’t affected with the lock-down (yet).  He got halfway to work when he had to turn around because they put Boston on lock down too.  When he got back, we decided to make our (previously scheduled) trip to NYC a three-day weekend.  We were already packed up from the night before, so we loaded into the car and got far away from the city.

We were happily on the road at 930AM and I had the pleasure of playing with Avery in the back seat.  Someone was in good spirits…

IMG_0746
That’s his ‘cheese’ face.

And of course a 4 hour ride for a toddler isn’t fun for long…. so after we ran out of toys and games (I could only hide the stuffed dog in so many places and wearing toys as hats wasn’t funny to Avery after 10 minutes of that), I let Avery watch some “Elle”.  AKA Elmo.

IMG_0747

Avery is too cute… he tries to say ‘Elmo’ but gets stuck on with his tongue on the ‘L’  That kept us occupied until we stopped for lunch 2 1/2 hours later.  Wendys!  Avery ate some apple slices and nuggets.  He was thrilled to get out of the car and say ‘hi’ to every person that walked into the restaurant.  When we got back in the car, Avery took a nap.

When he woke up, we were in NYC and someone was very happy to see him.

IMG_0749

Avery was a little shy and sat reading his book (the kids meal prize from Wendys) before he started running around the place.

IMG_0748

We had a fun day visiting Vinay’s Mom, Aunt, and Grandma. After Avery went down that night, we put the news back on and were updated on the events in Boston.  Vinay and I headed out for desert together (mini date) and when we came back, they had caught him!

The rest of the weekend we visited, played outside, Vinay and I snuck away during Avery’s nap Saturday and caught the new G.I.Joe movie.  Then Sunday it was time to head home.

IMG_0751

But before we left, Avery had to play in a different kind of laundry basket while we waited for Daddy to bring the car.

IMG_0750

Vinay’s family was sad to see Avery go, but at least we had an extra day with them.

How often do you get to visit with parents and in-laws?   Are they around the corner or accross the country?  Luckily ours are within a short enough drive to make a weekend visit.

Who Doesn’t Love Free?

at&t commercial more or less

source: youtube, at&t

As soon as I wrote the title of this blog post, I realized it could make for a really good AT&T commercial.  I love those commercials.  The ones with the guy sitting down with kids asking them to explain what’s better, ‘more or less’?  And they go into this speal in their adorable kid verbage and reasoning… too cute!  I can’t wait until Avery starts making actual sentences… what fun to come!

Where was I?  Oh yes, Free.  So when Avery came along we were showered with lots of advice.  One of the suggestions that has (finally) come to fruition was from my dear friend, Roland at work (Daddy of 3 adorable boys).  He told me about Huggies Rewards – each huggies product has a code sticker that you can log in online, get points for, and redeem for rewards!  Well, all of Avery’s diapers are huggies (thank you Costco), so I’ve been logging them online and the points have been adding up.

With all rewards programs, it takes time to sign online and input the info.  But I just kept a stash of the codes in my bag, and once a month I’ll plug them in.  3 minutes a month is worth it, especially when it results in a really cool reward!

I’ve been perusing the ‘rewards catalog’ for a couple months now.  I had enough points for some lame rewards that didn’t interest me like magazine subscriptions – no thanks.  I get my parenting & SELF magazines and that’s all I need.  But yesterday I passed the 500pt mark and spotted a toy I actually wanted to buy Avery – valued at $19.99, but I get it (and shipped) for free.  I clicked the button and boom, it’s in the mail!  6-8 weeks before it arrives, but since it’s recommended for 3+, Avery can wait.  Maybe I’ll put it away for his birthday?

HUGGIES REWARDS
Avery loves buttons and zippers, so I was looking for a book or toy that allows him to practice that kinda stuff – so this was perfect.  Now instead of buying it, we got it free! Yeah, maybe I’m a little excited seeing as I’ve been logging these points for 18 months now, but free is free.  And it was so worth the little effort on my part. Can’t wait for it to come in the mail!!!

I am absolutely not paid to share my experiences and recommendations (although I’d be open to it if Huggies called me offering some big bucks), but until then (ha!) I just want to say, it’s worth the effort – just create a login at www.huggies.com.  They’re really great too – never got one solicitation email after signing up!  Or you could just send me your rewards points and I can use them! :)

What rewards programs have you tried that are worth it?  My latest attempt was using SaveUp.com for paying off my student loans.  You have to log in every day to ‘play’ in raffles.  After months of not winning anything, I gave up.  Not worth it.  I think my friend Alana is still trying to win at it… good luck girl!

  • Who do you think has had the biggest influence on your life?
    • Avery.  He has taught me patience, love, forgiveness (you’d be surprised at how little I get mad about, especially after getting head butted and wooden blocks thrown at my head), to smile and laugh at the simple things, to enjoy every moment, and how to function off of VERY little sleep.
  • What kind of games do you like to play?

  • What item is to your left?
    • My notepad
  • How do you think of material to blog about?
    • Actually I have too much to blog about and have to condense my posts!  I always want to share what Avery’s up to, share my adventures in running and working out, and I keep myself on track by having to blog about things like finances and reaching goals I set.

#4.  Blogs I nominate (11 is overkill, here are 5 blogs I adore)

Happy Blogging! xo

The {Big} Tax Refund Renovation

It’s that time of year.  Unfortunately, this year’s tax return looks NOTHING like last year’s.  Our refund last year was  5 digits long.  We had enough to pay off a student loan, credit card debt, put into Avery’s college fund, oh yeah, and build a deck!

img_1614
This year, it was two.  Yep, two digits long.  This year we got a whopping $31 back.  But because we had to pay federal, and got back from the state, we put that on our credit card since our points were getting up there, and we’ll be getting a cash back reward of $25.  So our grand total after our 2012 taxes were filed, is $56.

Now, that’s much better than owing  which we thought we would need to.  But we found some papers we were missing and thankfully we didn’t have to pay.  After last year’s giant refund, we were planning on using our refund to pay off debt and do some home renovations, like last year.  Well, $56 sure won’t fund a big project like a deck, so we’ll have to get creative with this one.

Speaking of the deck, we never finished it.  We still have to put a set of stairs on the other side of the back stoop down to the deck, so we don’t have to walk around on the grass to get to it.

img_15571

Our building permit is good for a year (I think), so I mentioned it to my Dad that we need to finish it by end of May, and could he help?  When he was here visiting last weekend, he took measurements and was going to cut pieces for the stairs and bring them down next time.  When I found out we were going to get a measly tax refund, I called him and asked if the stairs would cost $31 or less, and he said yes.  The advantages of having a carpenter for a father. (LOVE YOU DADDY) Free labor, and he sometimes buys the supplies without letting me pay.  Especially in this case.

So there you go, our BIG plans for our BIG tax refund… a set of stairs – although I don’t know if you can technically call them stairs when there will probably be only 2-3 steps. Either way – looking forward to building the stairs with Dad next month….

Did you get a big tax refund?  How are you spending it?

Avery’s First Red Sox Game

In light of the events on Monday in our city, I held off sharing this fun post.  There’s just so much emotion and guilt when sharing something fun and exciting about your family when there are people in surgery, missing limbs, and families that are mourning deaths.  I am so thankful that our family and friends are all safe and we’re here another day to share about the fun and exciting stuff going on in our lives…. like Avery’s very first Red Sox Game.

Now let me backtrack a little – On Thursday I won a pair of Tickets to the Red Sox game, that night.  How?  Our company has tickets that they sometimes raffle off if the ticket holder can’t go.  I was lucky to see an email pop up on my screen that said the first 2 people to respond would each get a set to the game.  And fast fingers me, I got them!

IMG_0727

Now, this was early afternoon, and a 7PM game is NOPLACE for a toddler that goes to bed at 7.  Scrambled for a sitter.  All set.  Fast forward to 30 minutes before we were to leave for the game and our sitter had to bail.  I was pretty upset.  Red Sox games are rare, and tickets are so expensive – these were free and great seats!  It’s times like that I wish we lived close to family so I could easily call my Mom, or Sister, or Aunt to come watch Avery no problem.  Oh well.  So we again scrambled – this time to give the tickets away.  But since I was south of the city now, at home and the game was only 1 1/2 hours away, nobody wanted them.  So, what to do?  I marched over to our neighbors house (a nice lady with 4 daughters that has helped us shovel before and is always so kind), and  gave her the tickets.  At least somebody could use them.  (side note – got a thank you card today from her daughter who went to the game with her boyfriend. Yay!)

I was hoping this would create some good Karma, and what do you know…. when my parents came down for the weekend, guess what they had? Tickets to the Saturday Red Sox Game.  Front Row Third Base Line Seats!  A coworker had a death in the family and couldn’t go, so they handed them off to my Mom.  And guess what?  The game was a 1PM game.  And little kids under 2 get in free…. so Grammy and Grampy took Avery to his first Red Sox Game.

IMG_0734

Not only were the seats amazingly close, we recorded the game on TV and you can clearly see them a bunch of times!

IMG_0736

Avery got a warm-up ball from the opposing team, scarfed his first Fenway Frank, danced along with Sweet Caroline, and the game went 11 innings, and he behaved so well that they stayed the whole game!

IMG_0735

IMG_0741

Avery even threw a mitten and water bottle over the wall.  Good thing there was a kind cameraman there to hand it back to Avery.  Too bad for him, because Avery of coarse thought this was a game and kept doing it.

IMG_0737

IMG_0738

IMG_0739

Avery enjoyed the music and cheering and joined in.  He was even on the jumbo screen a couple times – dancing!

IMG_0740

So excited our little guy got his taste of the Boston spirit and had a great time (almost as much fun as Grammy and Grampy).  Now Vinay’s got to take him to his first Yankee game and we’ll have to wait and see which team he likes more, because as you know, we have quite an in-house rivalry :)

Do your believe in Karma? I do!  Well, at least that doing good for others with come full circle at some point…. this time the turnaround was quite fast!

Somber 5K for Boston

5K BOSTON MARATHON 2013

Yesterday was Patriots Day in Boston.  For those of you who don’t live here, it’s a state holiday, also known as Marathon Monday.  It’s a day off for most of us.  A day of cheering fans, triumphant stories, and amazing display of athleticism of thousands of people.  For someone training for a 5K, and just recently fell in love with running, I have even more respect for those runners out there.

Like every year, I had yesterday off.  But because Avery’s daycare was open (it’s outside the city), and I had some hours to makeup from being home sick with him two weeks ago, we all made it a ‘normal’ Monday.  Little did we know, it would be anything but normal.

My drive to work was actually exciting.  I drive on some of the roads the marathon is run.  It was early, before 7, and they were setting up barricades, port-o-poties, water stations, and signs.  I was on the phone with my Mom chatting as she got dressed for work telling her about all the cool race stuff I was passing.

When I got to work, I popped the marathon on one of my screens and watched the Elite Runners while working.  There were only a few of us in the office.  It was a quiet day of work, but also exciting because of the events happening just miles from us.

I left work at 3 and on my way to pickup Avery, and popped on the radio – but there wasn’t music.  There was some announcement about ‘explosions’ at the Marathon finish line, happending just 10 minutes ago.  I had just passed under the city on the Masspike.  There were hundreds of people passing on the bridges, especially next to Fenway Park, and I thought nothing of it until I heard the announcement.  I immediately turned off the radio and called Vinay.  I told him I was OK and on my way out of the city headed south to get Avery.  He was OK, still at work in South Boston. When I hung up with him, I tried to get a hold of my Mom, who had sent me a text message just as I was getting on the highway.  There was no answer at home, so I left them a voicemail that we were OK.

Driving south on the highway, there were emergency vehicles with lights and sirens blasting heading into the city.  This was not good.  The people on the radio said there were two explosions and fans were injured   The played a clip of the sounds from the finish line at the time of the explosion - horrifying.  When I picked Avery up, he was fine.  I updated his teachers on the goings on.  One of them was outside on the phone trying to get details of what happened.

I packed Avery up in the car and headed home.  We listened to his kids music CD on the way.  I made a quick phone call to a coworker, because I knew his friend had ran the marathon.  We were tracking him online during the race.  He was OK.

The last thing I wanted to do when I got home was sit Avery in front of the horrible events on TV.  So we took advantage of the gorgeous weather and played at the park for an hour.  With these terrible events happening in our city, the only thing I wanted to do was be with Avery.  I was in shock from how close to home these events were and for them not to affect us – I was just so thankful and all I wanted was to be with Avery… my happy little guy running around the park, falling on his butt, yelling ‘dog-dog’ as an owner walked his dog down the street, pointing at planes in the sky.  Just being with him calmed me.  He even found a tree and was thrilled to sit up high in it.

Avery in a tree

When we got back to the house, I got in touch with my Dad, who hadn’t heard anything about it yet, and my sister texted, making sure we were OK.  When Vinay got home, we popped the TV on and got updated on the horrible events.  Avery had a normal afternoon, ate a yummy dinner of mac and cheese and a WHOLE hot dog, followed by half a clementine for desert.  At bath time, when Avery was more interested in pouring water from one plastic cup to another than playing with us, Vinay and I popped open our phones and we realized the cell service in Boston had been turned off and people were wondering where everyone is.  I had text messages and phone calls from friends making sure we were OK (I usually leave my phone somewhere when I’m playing with Avery and always miss calls and messages cuz of that). I quickly posted this on Facebook:

facebook post

I did a sweep of facebook and saw that one of our friend’s boyfriend had run the marathon and got stopped and diverted at 25.8 miles.  So close!  At least he was safe.  But can you imagine?  Training for so long for such a big event, and having THIS happen?!  And my cousin and his family went to the Sox game, along with my Project Manager at work – they were all OK.  Thank you email and Facebook.

We did our usual night time routine with Avery.  Pajamas, books, and I rock him a little to cuddle before putting him in his crib to sleep.  Last night I must have held him much much longer than usual because he was almost asleep when I put him down.  I guess when your city is being attacked, you’ll tend to hold your loved ones a little longer and closer.

We weren’t worried anything would happen to us.  We felt safe, just shaken up from the days events, still unfolding on TV.  I had a run scheduled, and still wanted to hit the gym.  I left Vinay to make dinner and with strict instructions to change the channel, because watching the same horrible clips on the news wasn’t good for anyone.

On my way to the gym, thinking about how everyone was contacting us wondering how we were, I made two quick phone calls, first to my Nana & Papa (my Mom’s parents) and then to my Grandma & Grandpa (Dad’s parents)… knowing they were probably wondering and worried.  They were glad to hear we were OK.

When I got to the gym, I was on a mission.  Today people were hurt, and killed.  People in my city.  The only city I’ve ever known.  The city I went to college.  I ran those streets my Freshman year after the Sox won the world series in 2004.  Crowds of thousands streaming towards Fenway Park – where just two days ago, Avery went to his first Red Sox game.  How could someone do something so horrible to this beautiful city, on such a joyous occasion?!

I had my first 3 mile run scheduled for this past Sunday, but I skipped it to spend time with my family visiting and to finish our taxes.  Good thing too, because last night I was full of emotion, hurt, anger, and shock – and I needed to vent it somehow.  So, I ran an impromptu 5K.  Just me and the treadmill, in a very empty gym (which is understandable – as I’m sure everyone wanted to be home with loved ones).  I kept a steady pace and went for it, and finished my first 5K in 35:00.  No, it’s not record-breaking, or even anything to brag about.  But for those people affected by the explosions at the Marathon finish line – this was for them.  For those thousands of runners that got diverted and didn’t get to finish their marathon – this was for them.  No, it wasn’t 26.2 miles, but it was the furthest I have ever run, and it was for them.

Attacks like this are forever going to change our city and especially the Boston Marathon, but damned if we don’t see MORE runners at the marathon next year…. and maybe one year, I’ll be one of them.

Halfway to a 5K!

Race Day is one month away!

I seriously feel accomplished… well, right now I do.  Last night was another story.  I don’t know what it was, but I just did not feel like going for a run.  There were a zillion things to do at home and I just filled my head with excuses, but I had a run schedule, so I went.  And it wasn’t a casual run, either.  This was my third 2 1/2 mile run.  When I run a new (further) distance, I do it at a steady pace, so I know I can at least finish the run.  Then after that, I try to beat my time.  Well, I was doing just that, which makes the run harder, and coupled with my mood, I was about to call it quits before mile one.  Ugh.

See, this is where I know running is more of a mental thing than physical.  Because although my body was telling me ‘NO!’, I pushed through it.  My breathing was horrible and I couldn’t find my stride, but I kept going and going.  And the closer the ‘finish’ came, the more confidence I had to speed up even more and beat my time.  When the treadmill hit 2.50mi, my time was 27:10…. 45 seconds faster than last time, and one minute & 30 seconds faster than my first 2 1/2 mile run last week.  Yay!  That right there gives me the boost I need to run my 3 miles on Sunday.

I did miss Zumba Tuesday night, but our schedule didn’t allow for it this week, so I was hoping to hit up Zumba Friday night but I think Erin said something about them doing a special Body Pump class instead.. which I’m not sure I’m ready for.  Maybe I am?  I’ll have to look into it.  Either way, I’ll hit the gym on Friday, especially before I chow down on Chinese food with my parents when they drive in for the weekend.

Oh and did you see I took a stroll with Avery last week?  The weather was nice enough so I tried a walk/jog mile with him.  It went well, except the sidewalks are horrible and I need to put air in the stroller tires.  Spring is here though… warmer weather and more daylight = more runs with Avery!

How do you keep yourself motivated to stick to your workouts? Having a schedule that I can flex with whats going on for the week works for me.  My original plan was 3 runs a week and 2 cross training days, but I found that 2 runs and 1-2 cross training days are more than enough to juggle with everything else going on.  So I made a few adjustments on my schedule to keep it realistic

I am loving the motivational posters online.  Is it just me, or is everyone on a health kick lately?  It’s great! Here is my latest favorite:

Erin,  I am so making one of these!
