Don’t Squish that Pea!

So much has changed the past few months in the food department for Avery – we’ve phased out the formula, bottles, and Gerber mush.  Now, Avery drinks water, milk, and juice throughout the day from sippy cups and he eats pretty much whatever we’re eating.

It’s been fun trying new foods, textures, colors, and watching Avery’s reaction.

Avery does great with finger foods.  He still gets spoon fed liquids like yogurt and applesauce, but we’re slowly teaching him to use a spoon.  He knows how to hold it and put it in a bowl but I’ve only seen him bring it to his mouth once.  He seems to think it’s a toy more than a feeding utensil.  Oh well… the doc says we don’t need to master this until 18 months.

We’re lucky Avery hasn’t had any food allergies yet either.  His latest food we’ve tried that we were originally avoiding because Vinay is very allergic was eggs.  He likes them, especially when they come with sausage. We haven’t tried any seafood yet, or peanut butter.

As much fun as trying new foods has been, cleaning up the mess after is not as much fun, to say the least. When Avery’s strapped to his highchair it usually starts good… he mows down his food like there’s no tomorrow.

Then when he’s full, he gets a kick out of trying to feed you the food, then he starts smushing the food with his fingers, and eventually throwing it…EVERYWHERE!

After Avery eats, he needs a good wipe down.  Messy messy eater!  Then we need a good 5 minutes to clean up the floor and chair, now covered in remnants from the meal.  Oh and I should mention Avery’s highchair is stratigically placed ontop a plastic mat (originally for an office chair) so his food doesn’t get on the dining room rug and it’s easier to clean up.

Some days Avery is super picky and will only eat goldfish and cheerios.  Other days, he will mow down food and I wonder where he puts it all!  His tiny 21 pound frame can only fit so much!  And some days he loves one food and the next he hates it.  I always have to have an arsenal of food ready to feed him in case he doesn’t like the original stuff I give him.

    • Yogurt
    • Dried Fruits
    • Apples (give him a whole one and he will chomp pieces out of it!)

How do you get your kids to behave during meal time?  We’re a long ways away from table manners, but at least he could stop throwing the food!

Thursday Throwback: Ba-Nana Bread

Since we’ve been blogging for over a year now, I thought I’d start a ‘Thursday Throwback‘ series.  We’ll see how well I actually keep up with it….

This past weekend I dug into my recipe book and brushed off the instructions to make my Nana’s Banana Bread that I hadn’t touched since April.  Since the warm months are now behind us, banana bread seemed very fitting for a chilly fall weekend at home.  Plus, running the stove for a hour cooking the bread will warm up the house a little bit, right?!

So, after Avery was fast asleep, I made myself at home in my tiny kitchen

IMG_2574

I made meatloaf for dinner, so while that was in the oven, I mixed up the banana bread – while watching Project Runway (I know, I know, guilty pleasure.  Hey when else do I have time to watch TV?!  Gotta multi task!)

Nana’s Banana Bread Recipe:

  • Sift together 1 3/4c. flour, 2tsp. baking powder, 1/4tsp. baking soda, 1/2tsp. salt.
  • Work 1/3c. shortening until fluffy, then add 2/3c. sugar.
  • Beat and add 2 eggs.
  • Add flour mixture, alternately with 1c. mashed banana, beating until smooth.
  • Pour into 9x5x3 greased loaf pan.
  • Bake at 350 for about 1 hour.
  • ***I added chocolate chips to my version :) ***

By the time it popped out of the oven, it was too late to enjoy so I wrapped it up on the counter… and had a piece here and there this week.  Then I noticed it was going really fast… and I wasn’t the only one eating it…

IMG_2583

I asked the hubby (because Avery can’t reach the counter YET and that leaves only one culprit), and he had been having a slice for breakfast every morning.  I totally took this as a compliment and my inner chef grinned with pride!  See, my hubby HATES sweets.  He really doesn’t care for cake or pie or any of the yummy treats I LOVE LOVE LOVE.  So, I was completely taken aback when he said he really liked it.  And then even more so when he asked me to make more… and maybe try some other kinds like Cranberry.

Cranberry bread?  I have no idea how to make that, or any other kind of bread. Crap…

Help!  Send me some good bread recipes…

Dinner Please, Hold the Chunks

Since Avery is now crawling, he has graduated into a new stage of foods!  He’s moved on from the ‘sitter’ stage to the ‘crawler’ stage in Gerber Foods. (Yes, I’ve abandoned the homemade baby food.  A working mom can only do so much!)

(source)

We’re right on target with introducing foods too, because we’re tried all the ‘sitter’ stage foods – except strawberries.  We’re holding off on those, because they’re a common allergy.  But of the new ‘sitter’ foods, he loves broccoli, yogurt, and chicken.  He doesn’t care for pineapple or raspberries though.

Here’s a peak into Avery’s cabinet in the kitchen.

I know, I can be an organization freak sometimes!  But when it comes to Avery and his feedings and schedule, organizing stuff like this just makes life easier!  So, he has a fruit for breakfast, veggie at lunch, yogurt for snack, and meat for dinner.  We have another cabinet of the ‘new’ foods he hasn’t tried… we keep them in another cabinet so we don’t accidentally choose something he hasn’t tried yet.

So, when it was time to start the ‘crawler’ foods, I bought a couple varieties and tried them out.  Well, I really only had to try one to see that Avery DID NOT like them…

Doesn’t he look thrilled?! You see the food on the spoon… how it’s kinda…chunky?  Well the difference from the ‘supported sitter’ and ‘sitter’ stage wasn’t much change in consistency… but introduced proteins and other veggies & fruits.  But this new ‘crawler’ stage food has small ‘chunks’ of food.  And apparently, Avery doesn’t like chunks…

Because it was the same beef & veggies food that he had in the ‘sitter’ stage… but the consistancy left him looking very unsatisfied…to say the least…

NOT a happy eater! He did not like the chunks and just spit them out eventually.  Oh well…we will keep trying.  He’s still getting the hang of chewing with his two teeth… so maybe some more practice on puffs & cookies is needed before we move onto these big kid foods – those he does know how to pickup and eat with his hands!

Are your kiddos picky eaters?  What foods do they love and hate?  Avery’s favorite is yogurt and applesauce – he would eat them every meal, every day if we let him!
