B Strong & Escape to NYC

The past two weeks has been full of emotions for our city of Boston.  First the bombings on Marathon Monday, hundreds injured and in surgeries all week, the manhunt on Friday that closed down the city, and now a week of funerals for those lost.  Running my virtual 5K for Boston seems so insignificant compared to the pourout of support from around the world for Boston.  Can you believe the charity fund created has passed 21 million dollars!?  We did our part to help.  I bought ‘One Boston’ T shirts for my parents & Vinay (They didn’t have my size because they sold out fast).

one boston tee shirtIt took a little research to find legit T shirts, because there are already so many scams out there (so sad).  I found them on adidas’ website – the same company that makes all Boston Marathon gear, and 100% of the proceeds of these shirts go to One Fund Boston!  In no way will money replace what was lost, but the commradery of Bostonians and runners around the world is just such an amazing tribute to those affected by the horrible events last week – and we’re so happy we can do a little to help.

For those of you that don’t know, I work in Watertown, Mass.  Yeah, the sleepy little suburb of Boston that was the epicenter of last Friday’s manhunt for the second bombing suspect.  I had no idea what was going on until I was about to step out of the kitchen at 6:15am to head to work and a coworker called me and told me not to go in because the office was closed.  Closed!?  Why would they close the office?  The office never closes – unless the city is shut down – which it was for the Hurricane warning last fall, and this time… something even scarier – a marathon bomber was on the loose!   We switched on the tube and after catching up on the lockdown in Watertown, we decided I would stay home with Avery.  I was itching to make a trip to the gym, and send Avery to daycare for a 1/2 day (it was paid for so why not?) but because they kept saying on the news that they had no idea where the guy was, we weren’t going to risk it.

So, Avery and I stayed home while Vinay headed off to work.  We snuggled on the couch while I caught up on the events on TV.

Then we did some stacking – Avery loves this toy….

And even some laundry…

Vinay worked in Boston, which wasn’t affected with the lock-down (yet).  He got halfway to work when he had to turn around because they put Boston on lock down too.  When he got back, we decided to make our (previously scheduled) trip to NYC a three-day weekend.  We were already packed up from the night before, so we loaded into the car and got far away from the city.

We were happily on the road at 930AM and I had the pleasure of playing with Avery in the back seat.  Someone was in good spirits…

That’s his ‘cheese’ face.

And of course a 4 hour ride for a toddler isn’t fun for long…. so after we ran out of toys and games (I could only hide the stuffed dog in so many places and wearing toys as hats wasn’t funny to Avery after 10 minutes of that), I let Avery watch some “Elle”.  AKA Elmo.

IMG_0747

Avery is too cute… he tries to say ‘Elmo’ but gets stuck on with his tongue on the ‘L’  That kept us occupied until we stopped for lunch 2 1/2 hours later.  Wendys!  Avery ate some apple slices and nuggets.  He was thrilled to get out of the car and say ‘hi’ to every person that walked into the restaurant.  When we got back in the car, Avery took a nap.

When he woke up, we were in NYC and someone was very happy to see him.

Avery was a little shy and sat reading his book (the kids meal prize from Wendys) before he started running around the place.

We had a fun day visiting Vinay’s Mom, Aunt, and Grandma. After Avery went down that night, we put the news back on and were updated on the events in Boston.  Vinay and I headed out for desert together (mini date) and when we came back, they had caught him!

The rest of the weekend we visited, played outside, Vinay and I snuck away during Avery’s nap Saturday and caught the new G.I.Joe movie.  Then Sunday it was time to head home.

But before we left, Avery had to play in a different kind of laundry basket while we waited for Daddy to bring the car.

Vinay’s family was sad to see Avery go, but at least we had an extra day with them.

How often do you get to visit with parents and in-laws?   Are they around the corner or accross the country?  Luckily ours are within a short enough drive to make a weekend visit.

Weekend with Grampy

While I was off gallivanting with the Ya-Ya sisters, Avery was busy keeping his Grampy on his toes…

I’ll preface this with, Grampy asked for it.  I had plans to visit VT and Grampy would watch Avery, but he was a little hesitant to.. I don’t think he’s ever been ALONE with a kiddo that long before.  So, my Mom’s friend offered to take Avery.  At first, my Dad said OK, then after thinking about it, he said ‘No, he’s my Grandson. I want to watch him!’ And that was that.  I came up Friday night and let Avery loose…

And sharing with his Grampy…

Grampy was alone with Avery Saturday morning thru Sunday morning.  He did a great job.  Like an over protective mother, I called a couple times to check in with them… and all was good.  Avery bonked his head once, and Grampy thought he left a bump, but then realized that was just the shape of his head… haha.  When I asked Grampy how he was doing, he said he was tired.. and Avery was an ‘energizer bunny’!

That night, Avery went to sleep quickly for him, but did his usual (since this past week) wake up at 1am and not go back to sleep for a couple hours.  The night before Grampy had scolded me on taking Avery into bed with me…. so what did Grampy do when Avery woke up in the middle of the night and he was exhausted from a day chasing a toddler around?… he brought him into bed with him!  Avery, Grampy, Pokey, and Frasier (the dogs) all in bed together… man I wish I had a picture of that!

When all was said and done, they had some great bonding time together and Grampy had a new understanding for what we (Mom & I) do  (his words exactly)… Thanks for giving me a break, Dad.  And I’m so glad he and Avery got some special time together.

Do you ‘send’ your kiddos to spend the weekend with family?  Although we’re far away, we try to squeeze in time for Avery to spend with his grandparents.  We’ll be visiting NYC again soon for Avery to visit his Grandma and Great Grandma!

The Ya-Ya Sisterhood

I love my family.  Beyond our little family of three here in our cozy home, and 250 miles away is my extended family.  And although I’m the black sheep a zillion miles away in the big city, I still feel super close to them.  I always make an effort to attend our many family gatherings for weddings, graduations, holidays, and our yearly themed reunions. This past weekend I made a special trip up to celebrate my Grandmother’s 84th birthday.  Like most other celebrations in our family, we do things a little differently…

Do you remember this movie that came out in 2002?

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”

Well, that movie sparked a yearly tradition… All my aunts (My Grandma’s daughter-in-laws, and he one daughter… my Dad is one of 8, and 7 are boys) took on the Ya-Ya Sisterhood name and made a weekend trip for my Grandma’s birthday every year.  See, I was only a teenager when they started this, so forgive my fuzzy memory of how this all started because as a part of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, everything they did was a secret.  I saw pictures of them in silly hats and boas, they all had silly names like ‘Countess Happy Homemaker” and my Grandma was the “Queen”…or something like that.  And there were lots of giggling and stories when they were together at gatherings… but I never really knew… ‘exactly’ what they did.. and why it was so much fun.  Everything your parents do when you are a teen is so ‘un-cool’ anyways…

Then, in 2009, I got inducted…. and realized how AMAZING this ‘sisterhood’ was!  After years of weekend getaways to a B&B, shopping, dinner, movies, etc,  they decided it was time to involve the next generation.  My cousin Amy and I were of age (have to be 21) at the time and we joined them for the weekend.  Now, without disclosing too much information, I’ll share a few old photos and just say that we were first ‘Yo-Yos’ for a day…

…drabbed in pink shirts and tiaras, looking like fools walking around for the weekend and getting stopped by people to explain the shirts… but after all the sillyness, we were inducted into the group and I’ve shared in 3 amazing weekends with these ladies. One of which involved getting a tattoo with my Grandma… yup, that’s right.  My Grandma and I got tattoos together.  How cool is that?!

I missed out on last year’s adventures… because Avery had just been born.  But this year, my amazing father took Avery so my Mom and I could enjoy the weekend with our ‘sisters’.

We had rented a cabin on Lake Champlain and spent our time relaxing and chatting by a fire, taking walks, fishing and watching the beautiful lake view, we went to dinner at the Blue Paddle Bistro (amazing food!  And ask for Number 16…he’s a great waiter.. and the youngest of 16 kids!), and played a yankee swap game – that resulted in someone getting a yard of cookies, another wearing an edible candy bikini, and another with something that vibrates… need I say more?

There is only so much I can disclose about our ‘secret’ sisterhood, but I if I try to explain the connection we have… I can’t bring to words how special it is. To share a weekend with such amazing women….  they’re all mothers that juggle home and work, uphold strong family values, know how to kick back and have a good time, and they’re all family… I have a special connection with each one and know that anything I ever need… they’re there for me.  And this year they were a much needed break for my hectic life… so thanks ladies… for an amazing weekend.  And of coarse… Happy Birthday Grandma.
