High Five for Friday

I’m in a pretty crummy mood this morning.  I forgot to set my alarm last night and slept in this morning – thowing our morning routine off, causing me to be late, and therefore I was stuck in traffic forever and got to work late, which means I need to work late to make up that time, which means I can’t pick Avery up until late, which means less time with him tonight… ugh NOT a good start to the day!

On a brighter note, it’s FRIDAY. T.G.I.F!  That means it’s ‘High Five’ time.  This is our FIFTH week hooking up with Flavors of My Life and From My Grey Desk… pretty awesome I’ve kept this up that long!  So, I’ll put my icky morning aside and share FIVE awesome things from this week…

1. Break out the Winter clothes!
IMG_0017
It’s officially COLD! Since Sandy blew thru, it’s been freezing!  We’re kicked on the heat in the house and it’s time for warmer clothes.  The girls at daycare LOVED Avery’s snowman sweater on Thursday.

2. Snow!

This is what I saw when I left the office on Tuesday.  Snow!  I work north-west of where we live and on my way home that night, snow turned to rain.  We didn’t get any snow at home (yet) but I am so excited for Avery to play in the snow this year.  Last year he was big enough to pull around in a sled but didn’t really have a clue what was going on.  This year it’s going to be fun!  Bring on the snow!

3. No-Cry Flu Shot!

IMG_0003

We popped into the doctor’s office this week for Avery second round of his first flu shot.  The nurse poked him and I quickly scooped him up expecting a cry… but…nothing.  Not a noise!  He then proceeded to squirm away from me so he could walk around and play with all the cool gadgets in the room.  Such a big boy!!!

4. Toddler Proof!

IMG_0001

Okay, we were a little behind the ball on this one.  Last month my Dad installed baby safe locks on the sink cabinets, and this past weekend we put up a gate around the glass entertainment center – the one full of buttons that Avery LOVES playing with..but isn’t safe.  With the $ we got back from returning Avery’s Bumbo Seat (it was recalled and you can get the most $ back at Babies R Us) we put it towards this monstrosity. Yah, it’s an eyesore, but it keeps Avery safe!

5. Getting Healthy!

IMG_2579
I’ll embellish more on this later, but my girl Erin and I have challenged each other.  We’re doing our own Biggest Loser for 16 weeks.  I know, THRU the holidays!  Isn’t it better to start before all the home cooked goodies come out?  Well, we had our first ‘weigh-in’ this morning and I’m winning!!!  If I have time later today at lunch (while I’m eating a salad instead of the FREE PIZZA they give at work on Fridays) I’ll write more about our fun challenge!

High Five for Friday

Finally Friday!  Whew, this week crawled on… happy it’s Friday and we have a weekend at home – good thing too, because we need to prep for Sandy!  Maybe Avery and I can build a fort (of blankets) before the hurricane comes!

This is our third week hooking up with  Flavors of My Life and From My Grey Desk – let’s roll into the weekend on a positive note… or five!

1. Today is Halloween Day at daycare.
IMG_2650
I noticed one of the signs on the door at daycare last week that they would be having a ‘Halloween Day’ the Friday before Halloween so the kiddos could dress up.  So, what did Mommy leave out for Avery to wear today?!  His ‘Super Avery’ costume!  Daddy texted a picture of Avery when he dropped him at daycare this morning and wrote, “Everyone’s dressed up mommy! The girls love my outfit!”

2. I found my sunglasses!

You know that show ‘Hoarders’?  Well, Avery has a favorite kitchen cabinet that he loves hiding in… and for the past week I’ve been loving the sun, but have no idea where my sunglasses are… well they were stashed away in Avery’s cabinet, along with Vinay’s watch.  Oh and I found a bag of Avery’s cookies in the fridge… maybe Avery thinks he is hoarding for winter?

3. Family Storytime.

I snagged this video last night.  We’ve gotten into a great routine of dinner, bath, jammies, books & bottle, bed.  So much that when the bath is done, Avery grabs his blankets and tries to sit in our lap.  He KNOWS its bedtime and wants it. SUCH a change from him fighting us to go to sleep.  Now he goes to bed awake and we can hear him talking to himself as he settles down to sleep…so cute!  PLUS he’s now sleeping thru the night a couple nights a week!

4. Woof Woof!

IMG_2599[1]

There’s been some talk this week about us getting a DOG! We’re just starting the discussion and looking at shelters – we might not get one for a few days, or months.  But I think we’re leaning towards getting one – someday in the near future….

5. Gym time!

IMG_2579
We’ve made time in our busy schedules to squeeze in time at our new gym.  It feels so good to take a break and de-stree while getting healthy!  I had fun at Zumba and Vinay did some cardio a couple nights after work… feelin’ good about health this week!

Jump on the Zumba Train – and proceed to fall off…

It is beyond me why I thought in 8th grade that I wanted to be a choreographer when I ‘grew up’ … maybe it was because I was infatuated with TRL and music videos were like forbidden candy since my parents banned me from watching MTV.

I’m not sure if it’s my lack of music video dance knowledge dating back to age 13, or the fact that I don’t have a drop of latin blood in me, because last night at my first Zumba class I was totally lost… looked like a fool… sweating like a pig… but it was actually fun!

I went into this class a complete virgin.  I had never taken a gym class before.  Never.  I’m more of a go to the gym and run on the treadmill kind of person.  But then again, I haven’t been an avid gym goer for years.  Years!  So with this new gym membership hubby and I have, I figured I’d start fresh and try something new.  I had heard of Zumba, and thought it would be a fun first class to try.  Plus my girlfriend Erin was looking for a class to go to-she had taken a class before somewhere else.  Perfect.  So, with water bottles and shoes in hand, we headed out for a girls night at the gym…

The anticipation and excitement built as we waited outside the studio for the class before us to finish.  The crowd around the doors grew and grew… and when we went in, it was like the flood gates had opened.  We walked in, left our water bottles up by the mirror in front of us, and by the time we picked a spot on the floor, the room was filled – forty or fifty women.  Holy crap!  Then the music started and the overly happy, pony tail bouncing instructor jumped up to the front of the group.  Here we go…

Up, down, bend, shuffle right, twirl, pump… holy crap this is fast!  I was a jumble of arms and legs for the first 3-4 songs.  Luckily we were in the second row, with a great view of the instructor (something I knew to do after going to line dancing with Erin) and she would repeat a move 3-5 times before going to the next, so I would catch on and nail the move, then we’d move onto the next.  Man did it keep me on my toes!

After the first song, Erin and I looked at each other with wide eyes, sweating, catching our breath and laughing about how silly we must look!  Then it was onto another song… and they just seemed to get harder and harder!  At one point I was stepping on my own feet, totally confused when we were supposed to shuffle or grapevine?!  I tried keeping up, at least moving to the right and left so I didn’t smack into the person next to me.  But I musta looked like a clown because during the dance, the instructor pointed at me and slowed down to show me the move… thanks lady!  Totally embarrassing.  And to add to it, the woman we were chatting with before the studio opened pipped in ‘This is only her first time!’ and at that point I was so thankful the music was really loud! Thank god Erin was there with me, because after that one she joined me in a good laugh that I needed to wipe away the embarrassment.  And then it was onto another song…

Most the dances were Latin inspired.  But one that was super-hard had South Asian dance moves… and I know this because Vinay and I go to Boston’s yearly Bhangra competition.  The dancers area amazing and holy crap are those moves hard!  We were swinging legs to the right, then the left, and kicking the air like a rocket!  So much fun, but so difficult!  And there were lots of ‘sexy’ moves with attitude  like fanning our faces and putting our hands on our hips…oh and the thrusting!  But after a while I got into a rhythm of first following the foot moves, then adding the hand moves, and wa-la, I got it!  It was a much better way to tackle the move than trying to mimic everything she was doing at once.

Before I knew it, we were doing a slow number with stretches and the class was over.  As we walked out, I told Erin I thought it was supposed to be an hour long class (thinking it had only been 30 minutes) and she glanced at her watch and said that it was.  Wow that flew by! And after it was done, I felt great. I had sweat for an hour, shared some laughs with a friend, and tried something new.  I was proud of myself.  And I’m sure I’ll be feeling the aching muscles later today…

When we parted ways last night we decided to make this a weekly thing… maybe not Zumba every week – although it’ll get easier as we learn the dances, but I also want to check out the kick-boxing class, and maybe pilates and yoga… oh dear I can see myself falling on my face in that one…

Have you tried Zumba?  Do you have any tips and tricks to share?  What other gym classes should I try… as a newcomer?
