Our {imported} Chistmas Tree

‘Tis the season… for stockings, present wrapping, and a REAL Christmas Tree!  Not to rag on our 3 foot plastic tree from last Christmas

I love that tree.  I’ve had is since Freshman year in college. It’s low maintenance and was a simple setup for our first family Christmas last year.  But there is something homey about having a REAL tree…

I grew up in Vermont.  Every year we’d trek out to the Llama farm… walk the rows of trees searching for the perfect one, chop it down, bring it home, and decorate it.  My dad used to setup the video camera (you know, the big boxes that hold a VHS that you have to hold up on your shoulder) on a tripod and set to record for a few seconds every couple minutes.  It would record us setting up the tree every year.  My sister, Sarah and I would take turns putting the star on every year (a big deal!).

On our road trip, I mentioned to Sarah that I kinda wanted a REAL tree.  But they are pricey where we live and it would be more maintenance with watering it and vacuuming up the needles..and then Avery…oh gosh what would it be like with him and ornaments!?… So I asked Grammy.  They do make shatter proof ornaments, and we can put them out of reach…

So with that, I put my order in.  And when my parents brought Avery home after our road trip, they also brought a tree!  Avery picked it out himself… but apparently wasn’t very interested…

We got some new ‘shatter proof’ ornaments and garland to add to our already growling ornament collection from last year…

Dad and Vinay rigged up the tree stand…

And we needed somewhere in our tiny house for the ‘big’ tree (it’s taller than me, so that’s big from my perspective!) So, I cleared the nook in the dining room where one of Avery’s play areas was…

Some toys he’s outgrown went in the basement and the others were moved to his bedroom.  And wa-la! we had room for a tree!

Let the tree trimming begin…

Is it straight?  No this way.. a little that way… perfect!

I chose all silver decorations, so if our tree was in a magazine, it would look something like this…

But then you gotta add all my childhood ornaments (there’s even one from my second birthday!), and all our new ornaments from last year…and you get a less picture perfect, but absolutely more homey tree that’s bursting with decorations like this!

Did you notice Avery was missing from all the ‘tree trimming’ ?  We strategically put up the tree while Avery was napping   A dear old friend (thanks, Mandie!) suggested we do that so when he sees the tree, he knows not to touch it, and doesn’t see us touching it.  And that worked out….kinda.  Since our ‘tree trimming’, Avery has picked off all the ornaments from the bottom foot of the tree and handed them to me.  I’ve put them up higher on the tree so he can’t reach them.  But overall he’s good about leaving it alone.

Now we’re in full holiday swing… I’ve got the (minimal) holiday decor out…stockings are hung, I used our old not-shatter proof ornaments as a centerpiece, and we’ve started putting up the holiday cards we’ve received….

Are you halls decked?  Do you have a REAL or ‘fake’ tree?

Chinese New-Year in Vermont

I’ve always been very family-oriented.  I love how close-knit my extended family has been growing up.  My Dad is one of 8 and my Mom is one of 4.  Therefore I have LOTS of aunts, uncles, and cousins.  What’s even better than having all of them, is celebrating holidays and having random gatherings together.  My Mom’s side we do Christmas and Easter.  On my Dad’s side we do Thanksgiving, Christmas, camping on Grandpa’s birthday weekend, and every week night one of the families visit my grandparents house.  Oh and we have a family reunion EVERY YEAR!

Every family has its quirks and craziness, right? (We’ve been doing this for 15+ years I think)  Well, we have this thing with our family reunions…. they are yearly, most of the family comes, and they are THEMED!  Yep, every single one has a different theme.  What does that mean?  Well, we all meet at this place that has a mess hall, cabins, outdoor space (like a summer camp) and spend the weekend doing activities – related to the theme.  Every year a group of 3-4 family members volunteer and choose the theme, plan activities, a big dinner and breakfast.

A look into a couple past reunions…

Chinese New Year 2012

A couple weekends ago we celebrated again.  This was our (Vinay & I) 3rd one together, and Avery’s First!

There was Chinese lantern lighting…

And as always, the duck race.  The duck race is a yearly tradition that  has nothing to do with the theme.  We all ‘buy’ ducks…

buying ducks

Each duck is numbered and your name goes on the list next to your duck’s number.  There are two groups.  One for adults and one for kids.  Then we release the ducks in the river…

And they are caught… the first one to the finish wins…

And guess who won this year?

duck race trophy

Yep, me!  I’m holding the infamous duck trophy. (plastic duck on top a wine bottle spray painted gold)  All our names are inscribed (sharpie marker) to the trophy and we win $$ (but we usually donate it back to the fund for next year – I did!) So I get to hang onto this baby for the next year.  I’m currently looking for a place in the house to display it…

Do you have family reunions?  How do you celebrate them?

Tall Ships

So, after letting the idea sit, we decided against the fireworks.  Instead, we opted for an activity-filled day.   The big news in Boston has been the ‘Tall Ships‘ which are a bunch of boats visiting for the holiday.  OpSail 2012 is bringing thousands of sailors in to join the celebration – and this means, their ships are here too! So, what better way to celebrate our Independence Day than visit the ships docked in Boston to celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

As a plane & ship enthusiast, Vinay brought me along with him to see New York City’s Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum complex when we were dating.  So, the Bicentennial event was right up our alley.

We packed up early and were waiting in line at noon when the gates opened…

And man was it hot!!!  Avery is under that hat keeping cool.

There were a bunch of naval ships from the US, Germany, Canada, and England docked, awaiting the masses of curious visitors.  They were huge!!!

Avery & I are so tiny next to the big ships! (and yes, I’m feeding him a bottle-gotta keep hydrated on a hot day!)

We first toured the Canadian ship – Here were are on bow…

I think the ships behind us are German & American.

We wandered around and saw a dummy they throw into the water for training, and their work-out area, and here’s Vinay (and our friend & his son) on the deck…

And when we asked a gentleman on the ship (carrying a BIG gun!) about the ship, he told us it’s main purpose was refueling other ships out in the water.  They most recently brought fuel (and beer) to the ship docked next to them.  Who could need anything else at sea?  Fuel and beer.

And Avery loved the rope railings… he held on and looked down into the water for a while…

Then it was off to the American ship, which had a HUGE line.  By the time we got on the ship (in a tour group) we had been baking in the sun for way too long and we still had to wait in a group to see parts of the ship, so we ducked out and headed to Castle Island (a beach/park) for some lunch… and ice cream!

Yum!  So, no fireworks, but lots of fun!  We still have plans to do something on the 4th.. so the holiday fun isn’t over yet.

What are you doing to Celebrate the 4th of July?
