New Arrival…

Guess what just got delivered to our house this morning….

new couch delivered

Our new couch!  Oh I already love the warm beige fabric and it’s 14″ shorter than our ‘old’ couch, so you can imagine how psyched I am to get home and start rearranging furniture!  And I just noticed… the couch came with pillows?  BONUS!

PLUS this means we have somewhere to park our butts at night after Avery goes to sleep.  The past week we’ve been couchless and using our side chair and office chair to relax in front of the TV at night.

Here’s a look at what I’m thinking for the furniture arrangement:

living room layout

Our TV is on an awesome swivel bracket, so I can move the location of the couch without affecting our view of the screen.  I’d love to have this skewed setup to make a more formal seating area instead of the more linear and generic setup we had before.  Plus this opens up a big empty wall that would be perfect for family pictures! Something like our setup in the dining room:

But with more frames of different sizes.  I have family portraits from when Avery was 3 months old and the awesome pictures Vinay’s cousin took of Avery, and Wedding pictures that STILL aren’t up.  So excited to find them a home.  Oh and now I have to find a rug…

Can you tell I’m just a little excited?

Do you have a portrait wall at home?  Where do you display all your family portraits, school photos, wedding pictures?

1 Couch, 2 Couch…

Black couch, brown couch.  This isn’t the start of a bad Dr. Seuss story… rather it’s a story about getting a new couch.  Didn’t we just get one last year when we moved in?  Yep.  We’re not crazy redecoration freaks, we have a reason for this… I swear.  Let me explain…

This all started when our friends A & E were over babysitting Avery the night we went on our fun date night to Cirque du Soleil.  When we came back, Avery was sound asleep.. and so were they!  Well, just E.  They found the strap to pull out the sofa bed, and made themselves at home.  They loved it so much they now want one.   Good news: We got our current couch at Ikea in November last year, so they still have it.  Bad news: We bought it on sale and now it’s almost $200 more than we paid.  Eeek.  Enter my quiet hubby to resolve the dillemma, “I hate that couch, let’s just sell ours to them and get a new one?”  What?  Since when does he hate our couch?  I wasn’t aware of this.  I love our couch.  I always wanted an “L” shaped couch with a chaise I can lay out on, and it’s modern, and perfect.  Apparently not.  Vinay doesn’t like how low the back cushions are, and he doesn’t find it comfy.  Let this be a lesson in our marriage, because I had no idea!

So, this sparked a crazy idea (especially since my next project should be the bathroom):  Let’s get a new couch!  Sell our couch to A & E, and use that to invest in something we are BOTH happy with, AND buy something this weekend because it’s Massachusetts tax free weekend (last year we bought everything for our kitchen renovation this weekend)  And so the search began…

First we set out our couch requirements:

  1. It must be a sleeper sofa – big enough for 2 people.
  2. It must be modern – no curved armrests, floral patterns, pleats, etc.
  3. The fabric must be easy to clean (the old one is – so much that when Grammy came to visit, she cleaned it with fabric cleaner and ALL the baby spit up stains were gone!)
  4. It MUST be comfy!
  5. It has to have a matching ottoman – my only request, so we can replace the sharp edged coffee table with it, so Avery can play safely.
  6. It must fit the budget.  We don’t want to regret credit card bills months down the road.

Then we searched online for potentials… here are a few that peaked our interest:

Skyline at Bobs, Northport at Bobs, Zenith at B&PDevin at B&P

And with those options, we set out to test them.  Luckily, Avery was napping, so we could mosey around and sit on each couch to test it (Yeah we were THAT couple…. sitting on EVERY sofa).  If it wasn’t comfy, we moved on.  After rounding the store two times, we went back to our favorite…

new living room set

It was actually my favorite from the pictures, and it fit all our requirements, AND it had an ottoman… but it also had an armchair… hmmm now I want the armchair too.  But could the whole set fit in our tiny, awkward shaped living room? Oh what are we getting ourselves into?  Our budget was out the window and we decided to splurge a little, since this was a living room set, something we could have for 5-10 years and would be safe and easy to clean as Avery grows.  Plus, the showroom set was dark beige, which would go great with our light beige walls and I could accent with any color!  So, with that, we purchased the set, to be delivered in 1 week, so we could go home, measure and rearrange to see if it would fit.  Should we decide against the set because it doesn’t fit or we find something else, we can cancel the order.

So, this week we’ll be playing with room layouts.  We’ll share soon…we’d love your feedback!

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture that you fell out of love with?  Did you sell it, refurb it, or just live with it?

The (thorn in my side) Bathroom

As new homeowners of a house that needs a little lot of TLC, there is ALWAYS a project to be done.  Before we even moved in, the house got a good cleaning, we renovated the kitchen and painted most of the rooms (Bedroom, Hallway, ..etc.).  When that was done, we were thrilled!  But the excitement doesn’t last long when you realize the other looming projects ahead of you…especially when you walk by them every day.  It’s like the chipped paint on the window frame in the dining room is calling to me… ‘paint me!  It’ll only take a few mintues’…

Among the various projects we’ve completed on our (always growing) Honey-Do-List, is our bathroom.  Every time I step foot into it, I’m reminded of how much I want to remodel it.

Eeek!  I know, I know… it’s screaming for attention.  However, that attention requires a design, and money to make that design happen.  We’ve just about busted through all our funds for home renovation for the year – so we’re saving this beauty for next year.  Or maybe this winter?  So that leaves me approximately 6 months to figure out what the heck we’re gonna do with this mess…

The Plan:

  • Budget: $2-5K(ish).
  • Keeping: Toilet (it’s pretty new)
  • Demo: The icky tile, tub, & vanity?
  • New: 3 piece tub & vanity (we might be able to refinish it?), paint, flooring, medicine cabinet?
  • Time Frame: Long weekend?

I have a few ideas that I’ve been playing with… I’ll share and hopefully I’ll get some awesome feedback so I can start planning the remodel…

1. Space & Storage.  This is a small bathroom!  Captain obvious here, you definitely can’t tell that from the picture.  The bathroom is probably 5ft. x 7ft and contains a shower/tub, sink, and toilet.  Yup, we only have room for the essentials!  So I know we need to come up with some creative space saving solutions.  We do have a linen closet just outside the hallway for all the towels, so we just need room for the every day essentials – a place for our tooth brushes, towels, hand towels, somewhere to plug in my hair dryer, storage for makeup, cologne, you know… basic stuff.  (Oh and I should add that this is the ONLY bathroom in the house!) Here’s a couple cool storage solutions I like…

  • A Shallow Sink: more room in front of sink

    • Open Shelving: storage solution, but visually open/clean.

  • Floating Sink: more floor space gives the illusion of a bigger area

2. Light & Air.  In addition to it being a small space, there is no link to the outside.  No window.  We have a light in the center of the ceiling that has a fan.  I’m pretty sure the fan sucks – well, doesn’t suck (Haha, I’m so funny).  I don’t think the ventilation in the room is great, which is scary because we don’t want mildew where Avery plays with his rubber ducky.  Plus, there’s no natural light, and the light we have I swear is rigged, because I put makeup on and think I look great, then I get to work and use one of their stark-white bathrooms and boom – splochy!  So maybe that’s not just a lighting issue, but room color too….

3. Color. Because this is a small space, I have to be careful with color…. I don’t want it too look smaller or dominate the space.  So I was thinking about wainscoting – which would be white and I could put a warm or bold color above.  But maybe it’s too traditional?  Or what about stripes or stencil pattern?

Next?  I’ll put together a few possible floor plans & concept boards of some options…

Any suggestions?  Or maybe you can point me to a bathroom that you’ve remodeled or love?  Please share links!
