This year, my Dad turned 50. For his BIG birthday, we didn’t throw him a party, or have a big celebration. Instead, we bought him a house. Well, we rented a house on the cape (I’m not THAT rich, LOL). Dad loves the ocean, fishing, kayaking, etc. so it was a perfect gift! My Dad’s birthday was in March, so we’ve been anticipating this vacation, and sooo looking forward to it. This past week, we full-filled Dad’s gift and spent an amazing week together on the cape.
Our vacation started on Saturday. We couldn’t check in until 4pm, so my parents and sis left VT late morning and headed our way (we’re an hour from the cape house on the direct route). While they were driving, I played with Avery, packed our bags, and got in a 5K run at the gym. Way to start off a vaca!
When they arrived, we packed all our stuff in their truck, and were on our way! An hour later, we arrived here:
Nice photo bomb, Avery. Can you see him strutting around? It was hard to bring him inside – he loved the yard! The house was more than we expected. Waterfront with a dock and a 180 degree view of the ocean:
The house had 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and was fully stocked with kitchen supplies, 2 kayaks, patio furniture, the works! Mom and Dad got the Master Suite upstairs, Sarah stayed in the convertible couch with a TV room that smelled like an old man, and Avery and I shacked up here:
We spent some time exploring our new digs – inside and out, and even caught a little crab!
Then it was off to grab our needed groceries, and make a yummy dinner. We had just sat down for dinner and I snagged this quick photo when it started raining!
We quickly moved inside and had our first meal inside that night… but it was the only meal we ate inside all week! The rest of the week was gorgeous. After dinner we put Avery down and the ‘adults’ played a game of cards. It was so relaxing and fun to sit around a card table with my family and just play a game… and when we play cards, it gets pretty amusing. Since Avery was a little out of his element, in a new place, we let Fraiser sleep with him (aka stuffed version of my parents dog):
Sunday was our first (of three) days at the beach. But before we hit the beach, I did a 2.75mi run (woo-hoo!). It was super muggy though, uck! We drove to the nearest beach and spent a few hours in the sun, sand, and water.
That afternoon, I think (I might get the days mixed up here) while Avery napped and Grammy took watch, Sarah, Dad, and I rode our bikes (6-7 miles) to grab some grocery items. The breeze on the bike was nice during the hot weather. And we had a fun run-around avoiding riding through a rotary!
Monday was bike day. I had researched a nearby bike path before we went on our trip, and we had brought 4 bikes with us. We rented a trailer for Avery and hit the path. Avery soon fell asleep and we chugged along until we had rode the whole 10.7 miles.
As we parked our bikes and thought about where to get lunch, Avery informed us that he was ‘Durt-y’, and pointed to the tire in front of him. When we pulled him from the trailer he had some small splatters of dirt on him and was chewing like he had dirt in his mouth. Apparently, we should have put down the plastic thing over his trailer so he wouldn’t get dirt splattered on him, but we didn’t think of that – saying hey, it’s nice, he’s got a good breeze. Poor little guy – we couldn’t keep from laughing.
We found a nice little lunch place and at outside. It was soooo hot. There was a little breeze, but man it must have been in the 90s.
Grampy bought some juice, thinking he could share it with Avery. Wrong. Avery drank it all!
It was some all natural peach and sparkling water drink. Avery LOVED it. And after they gave him a sip, Grampy had to check to make sure there wasn’t any alcohol in it because the bottle looks like it would, but nothing bad was in it… all natural juices and he gobbled it up!
And after Avery’s hot dog and chips and our sandwiches were devoured, we HAD to stop for some ice cream before getting back on the bikes.
On the way back, we stopped at the beach so Aunt Sarah could take a swim! Oh and I had to change Avery’s diaper in that trailer thing… good thing it wasn’t a messy one!
Avery was a little fussy the way back thru the bike path, but we kept him occupied. Yes, we were that group yelling ‘Old McDonald Had a Farm’ on the Falmouth bike path last week. That was us! Avery would follow every verse with ‘E I E I”
22 miles later we were exhausted… and hot. We grabbed a pool at the store for Avery (which he tried fishing in) and lounged around that afternoon. Avery even shared some yummy nuts with Grampy.
Tuesday was fishing and museum day, Wednesday and Thursday were more beach days, and Friday we visited Martha’s Vineyard…. I’ll share soon!
Where did you take your summer vacation this year?
